Taekwondo is Korea's traditional martial arts and a national sport, and its excellence is already widely known in the international arena. In 2000 Taekwondo was first adopted as an official Olympic sport. There are nearly 70 million practicing this sport including U.S. President Barack Obama, Indonesian President Honduras and IOC Chairman Jacques Rogge.
Currently, a number of public schools in the East coast are teaching Taekwondo as part of regular curriculum and the number of schools is expected to grow even to the West coast. U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama also chose Taekwondo as a partnering sport for her campaign against child obesity "Let's Move".
Tae in Taekwondo refers to a typhoon-like kick, Kwon refers to the right use of fist, and Do refers to the way a human being should live.
There are various types of Taekwondo including Poomsae (posture), battle and performance. The black belts go from level 1 to 9.
Tae Kwon Do is an ancient Korean martial art. It is a method of self-defense without weapons which incorporates both physical and mental training.
Tae Kwon Do is not just a sport or physical fitness program, however. It is an investment for life. Through development of both the mental and physical capabilities of the individual, Tae Kwon Do offers a renewed sense of confidence, peace of mind and security. It increases stamina, muscle tone, strength, coordination and helps to control weight. Thus, training in the martial arts is an investment in both your present and future well-being.
WHY IS TAEKWONDO SO POPULAR?
Tae Kwon Do has endured for centuries and is today experiencing extremely rapid growth because it offers a multitude of benefits that can be enjoyed by all people regardless of age, sex or culture. Today, Tae Kwon Do is being taught and practiced in over 144 countries.
Tae Kwon Do is the martial art through which one can develop proficiency in self-defense in a relatively short span of time. It is the art of self-defense that has been scientifically formulated for maximum efficiency of motion and therefore proven to be highly effective for self-defense. With sufficient practice, the entire body of the practitioner becomes a weapon. When this level is achieved, quick reaction becomes second nature and a true sense of self-confidence is attained.
BENEFIT OF TAEKWONDO
Everyone and anyone can reap rewards from practicing Tae Kwon Do. Children develop concentration, focus and self-confidence which will help them in school. Teens experience a sense of pride in themselves to stand-up for what is right, even when faced with conflicting moral values, temptations and peer pressure. Adults find that Tae Kwon Do allows them to advance at their own pace, handle daily stress and feel years younger. Everyone sets their own personal goals of achievement in order to become a well-developed, graceful and fulfilled individual.
